Free Essays on Puritans

The earliest form of Puritan political correctness has greatly influenced the progression of American society. Past events have the ability to affect the reputation of the area in which they occurred throughout history. Distinguished events may become a model for future peoples. Notorious events may leave a stigma on the area. A region such as Nazi Germany is remembered today for the abhorrent Holocaust that took place there many years ago. As Germany is remembered for a certain event in the past, the Salem witch-hunt has left a dark mark in New England’s history. Paul Johnson, a historian, wrote an article for The Spectator on Puritan New England and the Salem witch-hunt. I both qualify and refute many of his ideas throughout the article. New England Puritans were led by their god to live humbly and dress modestly. They enforced their ideals in all aspects of life. Puritan society was very strict. Education was very important to those who wanted to preserve their central values. Religion was most important to the Puritans because they believed that God governed all. As Johnson states, the Salem witch-hunt was unnecessary. It is â€Å"the quintessential event of New England history†. It will forever be remembered that the witch-hunt took place there. Many innocent men and women were killed due to false accusations of witchcraft and communicating with the devil. Johnson believes that although it has been made public and discussed in politics for many years, it still remains peculiar to the region. I agree that many view the occurrence differently. Both ends of the â€Å"political spectrum† have different opinions. Some, as does Paul Johnson, believe that it was a horrible, needless event, and others belie ve that it can be justified in some ways. Today, there are also those who believe that it can be overlooked. I agree with Johnson’s statement that all will agree that it was excessive, irrational, pious, and moralistic. The Salem w... Free Essays on Puritans Man’s Deep Thoughts in Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening Robert Frost’s poem Stopping by the Woods on a Snowy Evening is a poem that deals with the inner thoughts of a man. The speaker stops to soak in his surroundings on his way home. He begins to realize there are many beautiful things surrounding him. His thoughts begin to wander as he thinks about the snow, what the owner of the woods might think if he caught him stopping there, and what the horse thinks. The speaker of the poem stops to rest for a moment. While he is stopped, he begins to look around. He sees the snow and hears the wind: â€Å"of easy wind and downy flake† (line 12). He realizes that the woods are filling up with snow. This is a beautiful sight. The frozen lake is far from him and it is the darkest day of the whole year. As the speaker notices that the woods are filling up with snow, he begins to wonder â€Å"whose woods these are I think I know† (line1). This makes him wonder what the owner of the woods might think of his stopping out in the middle of the woods â€Å"between the woods and frozen lake† (line7). He soon reassures himself â€Å"the owner will not see me stopping here† (line 3) because his house is in the village though† (line 2). Next, he wonders what the horse thinks: â€Å"my horse must think it queer† (line 5). He is not stopped close to a farmhouse, and the only thing one can hear is the falling snow and the horse’s bells: â€Å"The horse shakes his bells to ask if there is a mistake; he gives his harness bells a shake to ask if there is some mistake†(lines 9-10). The horse is probably tired and wants to hurry home, so the stop puzzles him. The narrator stops to take in the beauty of the wintry surroundings. The whole scene that surrounds him has absolutely captivated his mind. The speaker thinks the woods are lovely, dark and deep. He also realizes that he must be on his way because he has promises to keep: â€Å"but I have pr...

Die Prinzen Deutschland and Millionär German Lyrics

Die Prinzen 'Deutschland' and 'Millionr' German Lyrics Pop music fans in German-speaking countries are very familiar with the band Die Prinzen. They topped the charts in the 80s and  90s with songs like  Deutschland and  Millionr, and their songs are filled with satirical lyrics about German society. If you have yet to discover this famous pop band, now is a perfect time. Two of their hit songs are included below with a direct English translation that demonstrates the bands humor. An Introduction to Die Prinzen (The Princes) With 14 gold and six platinum records  and over five million recordings sold, Die Prinzen (pronounced  DEE PRINT-sen)  are one of the most popular German pop bands of all time. Before they became Die Prinzen, the groups members were all in the Thomanerchor of the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig, which is one reason they specialize in  a capella  music (singing without instrumental accompaniment). In the 1980s, the bands members were Sebastian Krumbiegel, Wolfgang Lenk, Jens Sembner, and Henri Schmidt. The lyrics of their songs are usually satiric and humorous, with tongue-in-cheek criticism of the German government and German society. In 1990, the bands album Das Leben ist grausam, and the singles Gabi und Klaus and  Millionr  were big hits. The band gained more recognition when it toured with Germanys Rock-Opa  Udo Lindenberg  in 1992. Their second album, Kà ¼ssen verboten, with its title hit song, sold well. In later albums, the band also added an instrumental techno sound to their voices. After a lull in the late 1990s, Die Prinzen regained their popularity in Germany with the popular song Olli Kahn, referring to Germanys World Cup star goalie Oliver Kahn. The band has played concert tours in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and Luxembourg.   Popular Songs A few of Die Prinzens songs were really big hits, and many of them can be found on the Ganz  oben  - Hits album as well as the albums they were originally released on. Millionr (1987) Album: Das Leben ist grausamAlles nur  geklaut (1993) Album: Alles nur  geklautKà ¼ssen verboten  (1992) Album: Kà ¼ssen verbotenSchwein sein  (1995) Album: SchweineSchlottersteinhymne  (1996) Album: Die CD  mit  der  mausDeutschland  (2001) Album: D Deutschland Lyrics Album: DReleased: 2001 Deutschland  is an irreverent, satirical song that makes a few pointed remarks about the homeland of Die Prinzen. This single from the album D (for Deutschland) was released on the 40th anniversary of the building of the Berlin Wall in 2001.   Some references in the song text are borrowed from right-wing, neo-Nazi phrases and the opening chorus of Deutsch, deutsch, deutsch... is reminiscent of Nazi times. But the song satirizes such overt patriotism and other behaviors that are typisch Deutsch. In case theres any doubt that this is satire, Die Prinzen use their favorite word (Schwein) at the very end to replace sein (to be). Below you will find the original German lyrics to Deutschland along with an English translation. Only the primary verses have been included and the chorus  Deutsch,  deutsch,  deutsch... is repeated between most verses. WARNING: Some words in these lyrics may be offensive to some people.   German Lyrics Direct Translation by Hyde Flippo Natrlich hat ein Deutscher Wetten, dass* erfundenVielen Dank fr die schnen StundenWir sind die freundlichsten Kunden auf dieser WeltWir sind bescheiden - wir haben GeldDie Allerbesten in jedem SportDie Steuern hier sind WeltrekordBereisen Sie Deutschland und bleiben Sie hierAuf diese Art von Besuchern warten wirEs kann jeder hier wohnen, dem es geflltWir sind das freundlichste Volk auf dieser Welt Of course a German invented Wetten, dass*Many thanks for the enjoyable hoursWere the friendliest customers in this worldWere modest - we have moneyThe very best in any sportThe taxes here set a world recordVisit Germany and stay hereIts this kind of visitor we wait forAnyone who likes it can live hereWere the friendliest people in this world Nur eine Kleinigkeit ist hier verkehrtUnd zwar, dass Schumacher** keinen Mercedes fhrt Just one little thing is out of whackAnd that is, Schumacher** doesnt drive a Mercedes Refrain:Das alles ist Deutschland - das alles sind wirDas gibt es nirgendwo anders - nur hier, nur hierDas alles ist Deutschland - das sind alles wirWir leben und wir sterben hier Refrain:All that is Germany - all that is usYou wont find that anywhere else - only here only hereAll that is Germany - all that is usWe live and die here Es bilden sich viele was auf Deutschland einUnd mancher findet es geil, ein Arschloch zu seinEs gibt manchen, der sich gern ber Kanaken beschwertUnd zum Ficken jedes Jahr nach Thailand fhrtWir lieben unsere Autos mehr als unsere FraunDenn deutschen Autos knnen wir vertraunGott hat die Erde nur einmal geksstGenau an dieser Stelle, wo jetzt Deutschland istWir sind berall die besten - natrlich auch im BettUnd zu Hunden und Katzen besonders nett Many people are arrogant about GermanyAnd some think its cool to be an aholeThere are some who like to complain about Kanaken [foreigners]And travel to Thailand every year to f-We love our cars more than our womenBecause we can trust German carsGod kissed the earth just onceRight on the spot where Germany is nowWere the best everywhere - naturally also in bedAnd were especially nice to dogs and cats Wir sind besonders gut im Auf-die-Fresse-haunauch im Feuerlegen kann man uns vertraunWir stehn auf Ordnung und SauberkeitWir sind jederzeit fr nen Krieg bereitSchnen Gru an die Welt, seht es endlich einWir knnen stolz auf Deutschland... SWINE! Millionr Lyrics   Album: Das Leben ist grausamReleased: 1987 Millionr is another of  Prinzens hit  songs. It was first released on the Das Leben ist grausam (Life is Cruel)  album. The lyrics are about how great it would be to become a millionaire and, as you can see, it is definitely another satirical song. Again, the main verses of this song have been included here with the English translation. The phrase Ich wr so gerne Millionr... (I would love to be a millionaire) is repeated between most verses. German Lyrics Direct Translation by Hyde Flippo Ich wr so gerne MillionrDann wr mein Konto niemals leerIch wr so gerne MillionrMillionenschwerIch wr so gerne Millionr Id really like to be a millionaireThen my account would never be emptyId really like to be a millionaireWorth millionsId really like to be a millionaire (Geld, Geld, Geld...) HW 9 HUMAN RESOURCE Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

HW 9 HUMAN RESOURCE - Assignment Example Many organizations have formulated the wage payment system based on the contribution of the result of the job to the common goal of the organization. Compensation policies of any organization must have provisions of timely review of payment structure in order to consolidate the resultant crises. This program of pay revision to wage earners is possible only with continuous interaction and awareness of their role in the organization. Broadbanding is a system of human resource management to administer the functions of employees of different departments under a particular appraisal system in order to facilitate easy formulation of payrolls. The salary ranges are consolidated into fewer pay ranges with higher difference between two adjacent levels of payment in this system with an intention to avoid overlap of payment ranges (p.435). This system of personnel management is beneficial to the organization as there are lots of chances of payment hikes without offers of promotion whereby expertise of the employee grows with his experience in the same field. Broadbanding may be considered to be on a competency based pay system. It alters the regular narrow salary ranges at different levels to extremely wide salary ranges for the most desirable employee. This system allows employees to choose a work of their interest and proficiency irrespective of the departments to which they are employed. Payment through broadband syst em ensures the participation of every employee in accomplishment of their skill set enhancement. Under the system of competency based compensation the skill set required by the employees of different fields is framed as a combination of works from various departments. While making a slab for payment at a broadband level, highly paid employees face a probable reduction in their pay because of the stipulation of their skill

Opportunities are at the heart of entrepreneurship. Critically discuss Essay

Opportunities are at the heart of entrepreneurship. Critically discuss this statement and explain how entrepreneurial opportunities are identified - Essay Example Entrepreneurial ventures provide more jobs than large firms. In the 70s and 60s, small enterprises had a net gain, despite severe recessions, in job creation. In the US, small firms account for two thirds of jobs created in the private sector (Sahlman, 2009 p26). Interestingly, over the same period, an approximated 500 companies lost five million jobs. Small and medium enterprises provide the local population with employment. This helps promote the development of such areas as inner cities. Sponsorship of local events also helps discover new talent which when developed proves beneficial to the local economy. Entrepreneurial opportunities can be defined as situations whereby new organizational methods, markets, raw materials, services, and goods can be introduced to existent ways of business operations. The introduction is via formation of new ends, means or means-ends relationships. The situations do not require a change in economic exchange terms in order to become entrepreneurial opportunities. Rather, all they need is potential to change the economic exchange terms. Entrepreneurial decisions, unlike satisfying or optimizing decisions, are creative decisions. This means that the entrepreneur creates the ends, means, or both in the chain. The creation of these frameworks of new means-ends in entrepreneurial making of decisions marks a crucial difference in optimization of previously established frameworks. They cannot be optimized for exploitation since they are unknown. Entrepreneurial decisions involve identification or creation of new ends or means previously undetected by participa nts in the market (Audretsch, 2010 p67). This paper aims to explain the role of opportunities in the process of entrepreneurship. It also seeks to examine entrepreneurship through a framework focused on the existence and characteristics of entrepreneurial opportunities. Finally, the paper seeks to discuss

The Effects of Population Increase on the Environment Essay -- overpop

The Effects of Population Increase on the Environment As inevitable as death and taxes, the population of the world will continue to grow until the government intervenes. The gross increase in population will generally lead to adverse effects on the environment. In the anthology, A Forest of Voices, an entry titled ?Is It Too Late by Anthony Weston deals with the history of legislation for the protection of the environment and stories of it?s destruction that are all too real. Seemingly, as the population increases, so should the level of intelligence for a sample population which would necessarily lead to a certain form of protection to the environment.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  It would seem quite apparent that an increase in population has a causal relationship with the status of the environment. Some factors that may lead to this are underlying, though. When this notion comes to mind, the immediate reaction may be that a population increase would deem more space to be required for the new population. This includes any area that is necessary for human survival, such as farmland area, water consumption, area to reside, and the production of all products necessary for an individual to function in society. There are statistics to prove this theory. All of the statistics given are a 20 year projection from 1990 to 2010 (Bryant). The projection shows that the population will increase just fewer than 2 billion in this period (Bryant). This would be about a 33% increase in population (Bryant). The study shows that in these 20 years, the amount of fish caught will increase 20%; the area of cropland will increase 5%; and the area of forests will decrease by 7% (Bryant). Granted these figures do not look too dangerous, but we are already three-quarters of the way through the projection. From these statistics, the future is starting to seem bleak.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  From these figures, it can be derived that the resources on Earth will eventually be depleted by the hand of man. As grim as the future may seem, there might be some hope just over the horizon. When an increase in population occurs, it must be taken into account that as the years pass the knowledge of the human race will increase. It could be assumed that as our intelligence increases, our means of survival will become more systematic with relation to the earth. Take for example the notion of ecology. It was not until the huma... ...ng that; the human race is arrogant, a lack of intelligence is logically equivalent to a certain level of arrogance, and as intelligence increases, arrogance decreases. All of theses given truths have been induced through the writer?s interpretation of the world. I see humans as arrogant by nature. I notice people of higher intellect may have an ego, but do not necessarily have a high level of arrogance. I also notice, on the other end of the spectrum, that the less intelligent a person is, the more likely that person is to be arrogant. Looking back on the last century, or so, there has been underlying instances of a world-wide call for awareness of the environment but nothing great has come to fruition. I guess that is what happens when you have a Texan as the President of the ?best? nation on Earth. Works Cited: Bryant, Peter J. Biodiversity and Conservation. 2002. How To Write A Research Summary Research Paper Example

How To Write A Research Summary Research Paper Example How To Write A Research Summary Paper How To Write A Research Summary Paper Preparing a research paper is tedious work. It requires a thorough investigation of the given topic and writing the whole extended essay. Students spend weeks and even months to provide the high-quality paper. However, sometimes they focus on the main body too much without spending much time on writing the conclusion. Indeed, the conclusion can play the crucial role in teachers evaluation. If you dont know how to write a research summary for your paper, read this article. Here you may find a step-by-step approach to preparing your conclusion. The Significance of a Perfectly Written Summary Students got used to the fact that conclusion is always at the end. And they suppose that everything written at the end is not significant because teachers may even not read it. However, research paper summary should be the most significant part. Moreover, teachers may even begin with reading the abstract introduction and conclusion. Only then they start an investigation of the main body. It helps them get an overall idea of what your paper is about. If the teacher sees that your research summary and introduction part are too broad, they will ask you to rewrite. That is why it is better to make your conclusion perfect at once. It will show how thoroughly you have been working on the paper. Main Steps in How to Write a Perfect Research Summary Professional writes prepare conclusion at the end. But it doesnt mean that it is the least significant part. Sometimes you need to spend more time on these 2-3 pages than on the whole main body. If you dont know how to write a research summary, you should follow the instructions mentioned below. By understanding each step, you will make the conclusion easier. Make Notes Before Concluding A research paper is a huge mass of info. You need to choose key ideas which you have investigated. Look at the subheading or topics which you have in the text. Select the main points from each of them and summarize in several sentences. These notes may help you understand what makes the core of your work. Use scanning techniques of reading It is not reasonable to reread the whole paper. Scan the text to find the key ideas. Avoid examples but focus on the main part. Some students write short conclusions at the end of each chapter of the work. Examine those paragraphs and make notes for your future summing-up. Prepare an outline of your conclusion Instead of just taking notes, you can make up an outline. It will be short, but you will have a clear plan at once. Rewrite the drafts, improve them. You will see that you know how to write a research summary thanks to the prepared structure. Focus on the Practical Part of Your Investigation It is true that students include both theoretical and practical part in their thesis or coursework. However, the practical one is more significant. It is where students show how their investigation can be used in different spheres. Write research summary about the key implications of the results and design procedure materials. Ask Your Scientific Supervisor to Check the Summary Communication with your teacher is a significant part of preparing the conclusion. Give your tutor the written summary and ask for feedback. Scientific supervisors are interested in helping you. All you need is asking for advice. The teacher knows all the ins and outs of how to write a research summary for your subject. Gender and Surrealism Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words

Gender and Surrealism - Essay Example The paper "Gender and Surrealism" analyzes surrealism art in the context of gender. It would equally be necessary to indicate that surrealism had emanated as a movement, which encompassed both literature and art, and had flourished in Europe in between the first and Second World War. It should clearly be noted that surrealism, as many believe, is not a negation theory, but a positive expression through different literature and art, that support certain positive attributes in the society. It depicted directly the scenario as it was in the post world war Europe, where politics and culture had enjoyed great dominance. In the early 1900, surrealists had a dear tendency to shape constructions to relay and depict sexuality and gender, and to be more specific, masculinity. Many feminist personalities by then had forged criticism on the surrealist approaches of gender, where the woman’s body had been deemed to be of symptomatic of the man misogyny. The man, during that time, was seen to have great influence on how the woman thought about him, considering the man had been integrated fully in the vision to bring peace during and after the World War I. The feminists continue to criticize surrealism, insisting that it was meant to be a male movement and fellowship. This is amidst the celebration of women surrealists such as Dorothea Tunning and Leonora Carrington, who liven between 1971 and 2011. The critics have been on the basis that the movement has continuously pioneered negative attributes relating to women.
