The Civil Rights Movement was a critical event that is important in African American History. From the 1950’s to the mid 1960’s, civil rights activists and leaders rose up across the nation to fight for equal rights and against discrimination. Even local citizens such as Rosa Parks, took a stand against segregation on public transportation. Others also participated in sit-ins inside diners for whites only. Although people expressed the need for equality, many efforts were shot down. Things began to change in the Jim Crow south when a young pastor named Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. led the largest civil rights boycott against the Montgomery, Alabama bus system. Two years later in 1931, Malcolm’s father was murdered. The Little family knew the KKK was involved in the incident but the police ruled it as suici de. The eight Little children were then split up and sent to various foster homes. Despite this, Malcolm was a bright and focused student, graduating at the top of his class. His dreams were smashed when his favorite teacher expressed that being a lawyer was ‘no realistic goal for a nigger† (cite). This statement was detrimental to Malcolm’s spirit because he lost interest in school and eventually dropped out of high school. He later decided to live with his sister Ella in Boston and worked various jobs. By 1942, Malcolm moved to Harlem, New York and by then he had turned to a life of crime, pimping, gambling and selling drugs. Eventually he was convicted of burglary in 1946 and sent to prison. While in prison Malcolm continued his education and began a self-transformation. His brother Reginald went to visit Malcolm in jail one day to update him with his recent conversion to Islam. The 1970s was a difficult time period in American history filled with chaos, domestic and international crises, and very poor presidential leadership. Richard Nixon was president during the early years of the seventies and he was far from popular in the eyes of the American people. With inflation rapidly rising, Nixon soon became unfavorable, and with the controversy surrounding his actions concerning the Watergate Crisis, he was impeached and forced to resign. His Vice President, Gerald R. Ford, soon took his place in the White House. However, Ford was unable to handle the crippling events taking place in the United States; his approval dropped drastically within months, and like Nixon he lost support of the American people. Carter pledged to make the government open and honest with substance and logical direction, he vowed to reduce federal agencies and emplo yees that were unnecessary, and he promised to break up the massive department of Health and Education into separate departments (Glad 305). He also aimed for progressive tax rates and promised he would cut income tax for the average American by forty percent (Glad 306). Carter also gained much support by promising not to relinquish control of the Panama Canal (Glad 307), and to reduce defense budget spending by billions (Glad 310). Carter became very popular among U.S. citizens because he was seen by a nation broken by inflation and unemployment as the man who could transform the status quo. However, Carter was unable to keep many of his promises and solve the many issues plaguing the country. Upon arrival in the White House, Carter immediately had to deal with problems stemming from an economy recently caught in a recession; he was bombarded with an onslaught of domestic affairs, including unemployment and a major budget deficit. They topped the charts in the 80s and  90s with songs like  Deutschland and  Millionr, and their songs are filled with satirical lyrics about German society. If you have yet to discover this famous pop band, now is a perfect time. Two of their hit songs are included below with a direct English translation that demonstrates the bands humor. An Introduction to Die Prinzen (The Princes) With 14 gold and six platinum records  and over five million recordings sold, Die Prinzen (pronounced  DEE PRINT-sen)  are one of the most popular German pop bands of all time. Before they became Die Prinzen, the groups members were all in the Thomanerchor of the Thomaskirche (St. Thomas Church) in Leipzig, which is one reason they specialize in  a capella  music (singing without instrumental accompaniment). In the 1980s, the bands members were Sebastian Krumbiegel, Wolfgang Lenk, Jens Sembner, and Henri Schmidt. The lyrics of their songs are usually satiric and humorous, with tongue-in-cheek criticism of the German government and German society. After a couple of weeks, Bob’s wife reads a letter from the doctor conforming that Bob has lung cancer and needs to set up an appointment as soon as possible. She goes to the doctor immediately and finds out that his lung cancer is in the last stage because he smokes about three to four packs of cigarettes every day. Bob doesn’t know that he is in the last stage, but his wife does. Furthermore, his wife breaks down and decides to be there for him so they could make it through. She forgets about all the complaints she had against him. Although, she could be lying because she knows he is suffering through a lung cancer, but this lie makes Bob really happy and he gains confidence that everything will be fine as long as his wife is there for him. A few weeks later, the doctor tells him that he has 50% chance of recovering, but in reality all the tests says that he has about 4 months to live. The food industry is full of misconceptions. â€Å"Food Inc. † declares that the food industry is using deceiving images of American farmlands to sell their product. Images of lush green fields, picket fences, and 1930’s farmhouses is only a â€Å"spinning of a pastoral fantasy†. In reality the food being consumed is coming from mistreated animals and large factories all over the country. Animals are treated horribly, known bacteria that they oversee and more important the health of the people consuming the products is not in any of the company’s top interest. All in all, this movie has shown me how brutal Americans can be to animals and how our own US Government seems not to care about its citizens health. I have learned to eat organic foods and to shop for produce only in season. The one question that kept arising in my mind during the movies was, I wonder where the food that the white house serves comes from.
